Corey Benjamin Stair
Corey Stair was the youngest of seven children of William B. Stair and Sina Ann McMullen. Born in Stairville, February 22, 1893. He was 17 years old in 1910 when his mother died and he went to Ashley to live with his older sister's family, Minerva Stair\Charles Stout of Manhattan Street. Also living there was his older brother Wilfred Stair.
While in Ashley he was employed for a time by the Jersey Central Railroad where his brother Wilfred and brother-in-law, Peter Stout also worked. His obituary indicates that after three years he left the area and went to "Cannda"( Canada?) where he resided for some time. In 1916 he returned to the Wilkes Barre area.
Corey Married Elizabeth M. Griffiths at the residence of Rev. Samuel McDowell, pastor of the Douglass Presbyterian Church of Lee Park at noon, Sunday, July 7, 1918. His brother Wilfred was best man. A news article indicated Corey Stair and his wife intended to reside in Canton, Ohio, although there is no indication they ever did. They resided at 90 Lee Park Avenue, Lee Park. A fortnight later, July 17th, while employed at the Vulcan Iron Works, he was injured by a flying sledge hammer hitting his face. The news article reported his face was badly injured and he was also injured inwardly. He was taken to his home in Lee Park.
A son, Corey B. Stair,Jr. was born Monday, January 27, 1919.
Corey Stair, Sr., died at 9:15, Tuesday morning November 25, 1919 in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. His death was attributed to peritonitis following an operation for appendicitis. He was buried the following Sunday from his home on Lee Park Avenue, Lee Park. Services were conducted in Douglass Presbyterian Church at 1 o'clock with Reverend Samuel McDowell officiating and the Reverend Charles Bond of the Baptist tabernacle offered a prayer.
Floral tributes were carried by Floyd Stair and Albert Rinehammer. Pall bearers were Hugh Leslie, William Thomas, Hugh Robinson, Henry Moyer, Gurnie Lyons and Charles Benninger. Interment was in Forty Fort Cemetery.
Wednesday, June 2, 1920, Corey B. Stair,Jr. died. He was 15 months and 6 days old, and at the time he and his mother were residing at their family home, 158 Hanover Street, Wilkes Barre. He was buried Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Forty-Fort Cemetery.
